The federal government is giving nearly $400,000 to tribes in New Mexico to fund permanent housing for Native American veterans who are homeless. It鈥檚 the first time federal housing grants of this kind have been made to tribes.
Zuni Pueblo and the Navajo Nation are among the 26 tribes awarded grant money by the U.S. Department of to address the longstanding problem of homelessness among Native American veterans.
The money will go to provide rental assistance and permanent housing to homeless veterans on tribal land.
HUD Secretary Julian Castro said in a that the tribes themselves are best able to administer the funds in ways that will benefit Native American veterans.
