The Albuquerque Public Schools board is starting its , after Raquel Reedy announced she鈥檒l step down next summer. Community members can tell the board what they want to see in the district鈥檚 new leader online or at a series of meetings in late November and early December.
The district held a meeting Friday geared toward business and government officials. Retired APS leader Toby Herrera gave a recap of what types of experience attendees said their new superintendent should have: 鈥淓xperience in a high-performing school district is one of the main points I see here," he said. "I also notice: successful in working with multiple unions, values students in decision-making, experience working with high-risk populations, and classroom experience.鈥�
Soon the board will hire a firm to launch a national search. Applications will be due in the spring.
Board member Yolanda Montoya Cordova said these meetings are just the first round of public input. 鈥淭here鈥檒l be some additional opportunities to hear from the community when we鈥檙e getting down to finalists and we鈥檙e gonna be making some decisions," she said.
District staff said thousands of people have already filled out a about the district's challenges and desired characteristics of the new superintendent.

- November 26, 6 to 7:30 p.m. - Roosevelt Middle School
- December 2, 6 to 7:30 p.m. - Zia Elementary School
- December 3, 6 to 7:30 p.m. - Manzano Mesa Elementary School
- December 3, 6 to 7:30 p.m. - Rio Grande High School
- December 5, 6 to 7:30 p.m. - Albuquerque High School
- December 5, 6 to 7:30 p.m. - Jimmy Carter Middle School
