Caves Alive
This time on The Children's Hour, we're joined by three cave biologists who are researching life underground. Dr. Diana Northup is a Visiting Associate Professor, Biology Professor Emerita, College of University Libraries & Learning Sciences at the University of New Mexico, Jenny Hathaway is the biologist inside Dr. Northup's laboratory, and Ryan Ozatalar is an undergraduate studying biology, graduating in Spring 2023.

On this episode we look at open educational resources. It's one way to curtail the steep costs college students face in buying text books. These are materials in the public domain or are under a license that allows them to be freely used, changed, or shared with others. We’ll hear from instructors at the University of New Mexico who are using and creating these materials and why they love them.

Acequias were created and maintained by Native Americans before the Spanish settlers arrived. Centuries later, acequias remain a common conveyance for water all around our state in the face of an unpredictable climate and constant water rights battles. On the next Let’s Talk New Mexico, we’ll highlight a new film showing how climate change is impacting the health of our acequias and agriculture, and, we'll check in with acequia users and legal experts. Should we be doing more to protect acequias?

Kid Pan Alley
Sat. 3/19 9a: Kid Pan Alley is an organization that empowers kids around the United States to write their own songs. We're joined this time on The Children's Hour by Paul and Cheryl Reisler who have written more than 2,500 songs with more than 70,000 children over the last 30 years.We've asked Paul and Cheryl to show us how Kid Pan Alley works, and to share music they've co-written with schools.Together with our Kids Crew, Paul and Cheryl will show us how we can help write the lyrics for a song of theirs that needs a bridge.Exploring the fundamentals of music education through creativity and participation, Kid Pan Alley will leave us all humming along.

Let's Talk long-term solutions to homelessness
On the next Let’s Talk New Mexico, we’re looking past the day shelters and soup kitchens to ask how chronic homelessness can be solved in the long term. We’ll be tackling the issue with representatives for city governments, non-profit organizations, and folks who offer trauma-informed care to those who have experienced homelessness first-hand.
