Getting your head around an illness, whether it is yours or a loved one鈥檚, can be hard. It is even tougher for kids.Now, a new children鈥檚 book ties a disease commonly found in New Mexico to one of the state鈥檚 favorite Christmas traditions: making biscochitos.

New Mexico is one of only two states in the U.S. that has an official state cookie. Lawmakers so designated the biscochito in 1989, but the cookie was a tradition in New Mexican households long before that.

There鈥檚 a new children鈥檚 book to help kids understand a genetic disease that disproportionately affects New Mexicans. 鈥淏iscochito鈥� tells the story of a grandmother with Cerebral Cavernomas baking the state cookie with her grandson.
