Math proficiency in New Mexico has declined in grades 5 through 11 each fiscal year since 2023. Last year, only 23% of the state’s K through 12 students tested proficient in math. A bill that seeks to tackle this issue passed its first committee Wednesday.

New Mexico has ranked 50th nationally in education and recent standardized test score rankings showed fourth and eighth grade students came in last nationally for proficiency in both reading and math. This election, voters will see candidates for the Public Education Commission on their ballots. And while none of the races are contested, 91°µÍø’sTaylor Velazquez spoke with an expert who says this points to the tension between the commission and New Mexico Public Education Department.
