In concert with the exhibition, FORAY, the ALBUQUERQUE ABSTRACT ARTISTS ALLIANCE invites you to join artist Bill Sabatini, FAIA, for a free collage workshop on October 15, from 9 AM鈥�12 PM at FUSION | 708. Space is limited, so please RSVP if you plan to attend.

COLLAGE: Loosen up and find your voice! When we face the canvas, we all struggle. Where do I start? What鈥檚 my next move? Where am I going?

We鈥檝e been taught to forge ahead and not dwell on these questions. But that鈥檚 easier said than done. Is there another way to approach color, shape, and all the other formal principles to create a composition that satisfies me? Sabatini has found collage to be a great way to forget about making 鈥渕istakes鈥� and free his impulses. It鈥檚 a smaller format, with no silly worries about wasting paint, and a simple way to test ideas and quickly produce tangible results. It is an easy way to compose and experiment.

Here is what you need to bring:

One or more substrates, at least 12鈥� x 16,鈥� to work on such as a wood cradle, cardboard, matboard, or any stiff material to provide a backing to your work

Scissors

Straight edge

Glue sticks, Elmers glue

Pencils, markers, white eraser

Colored paper of any type and from any source: (cereal boxes or other packaging) raw cardboard, Colored tissue or other translucent material, paint samples, textured paper. The limit is only your imagination. I don鈥檛 encourage using photographic imagery or other images from magazines. That鈥檚 another layer of graphic information beyond our consideration at this time.

We also will bring paper for your use

The goal of the workshop is two-fold. The first is to demonstrate a new way of working that will assist you in your art endeavors. Secondly, it鈥檚 to have some no-pressure fun with fellow artists. We鈥檒l take time at the end to put up the work and talk about it. Please join us!

If you respond well to the rhythm of weekly classes, would like to work more with a particular media, or want to get back into regular creative practice, this is the perfect place for you! As fellow artists, art instructors, and ArtFix moderators, Lea Anderson and Ivan Boyd, are here to offer valuable feedback, mentorship, tips and suggestions for whatever you want to work on. The last night of class will be set aside for a supportive group critique. This fun, friendly, unique atmosphere will provide opportunities for networking, discussion, and creative growth. Make time for this important part of your life! Open to all experience levels.

Come explore the art of making creature faces using air-dry clay, allowing you to create expressive, mask-like sculptures without the need for a kiln. Participants will learn fundamental clay modeling techniques, including slab construction, sculpting facial features, and adding textures. Once sculpted, you will use paint and accessories to decorate their masks.

Join Ranger Lily and Instructional Coordinator Rebekha for a guided tour of the permanent exhibition, "Bosque Redondo鈥�A Place of Suffering鈥�A Place of Survival." Participants will also experience a tour outdoors, visiting the site鈥檚 flock of Navajo Churro sheep and exploring the exterior grounds at Fort Sumner Historic Site. These tours teach people about the experiences of the Din茅 (Navajo) and Nd茅 (Mescalero Apache) who were forced to live at Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation in the 1860s, as well as stories of their resilience and hope through time. The tour is included with general admission of $7/adult and free for children 16 and younger and Native/Tribal Affiliations

On day two, we will create beeswax collages with our textures and seal them with melted beeswax to create compelling, glowing, finished works of art. Participating artists will also come away with a great assortment of textured collage papers for future projects. All materials included鈥� but bring anything you鈥檇 like to play with!
