If you are staff at the University of New Mexico, you haven鈥檛 been offered paid leave when you have a baby or adopt a child 鈥� until now.
UNM鈥檚 paid parental leave policy went into effect this month. Part-time and full-time staff employees at all UNM campuses when they welcome a new child into their family as long as they鈥檝e been at UNM for at least a year.
Under federal law employees can take 12 weeks of unpaid leave, and now UNM will pay for the first four.
This could affect more than 5,000 workers at UNM, according to the school鈥檚 online salary book, not including UNM Hospital.
UNM faculty of paid parental leave. That was approved in 2011. And the city of Albuquerque just approved 12 weeks of paid parental leave for its employees last December.
